CMS lists 132 hospitals run by the Veterans Health Administration and gave 112 of them an overall star rating for . 50 have five stars and 0 have one star. The other 20 were not rated. CMS's stated reason, in its own words: "There are too few measures or measure groups reported to calculate a star rating or measure group score."

A star summarizes up to five groups of measures, and CMS compares a hospital only with hospitals reporting a similar number of groups. These counts describe the ratings; they are not a ranking of VA care against other care. How the star rating works.

Five-star shares and peer groups

Of the 112 rated VA hospitals, 50 (44.6%) have five stars. Of all 3,174 rated hospitals, 384 (12.1%) do, and of the 3,062 rated hospitals other than VA, 334 (10.9%) do.

CMS compares a hospital only with hospitals that report a similar number of measure groups. In CMS's General Information file, 79 of the 112 rated VA hospitals (71%) report at least three measures in each of five groups, against 2,188 of the 3,062 rated hospitals other than VA (71%). CMS does not publish its peer-group assignment, so this is a count of those columns, not CMS's own grouping.
